Helen Robinson was expelled from Montessori school in the fifth grade for doing
nothing but drawing all day, every day. She ended up studying fine arts in
college with a concentration in photography. After a brief sojourn in
museum education she fell into graphic design through newspapers. She
was instantly seduced and continues to work as a designer almost thirty
years later.
As art director of Front Street/Boyds Mills Press, Helen
designed and produced award-winning children’s picture books, young
adult novels, poetry, and nonfiction titles. She also worked in
advertising and museum exhibit design, creating museum exhibit graphics
for the Maritime Center in South Norwalk, Connecticut, and the California
Aerospace Museum in Los Angeles. Between jobs she spent extended
periods of time painting and making jewelry in Mexico. She has
received design awards from the Creative Quarterly, the New York Book
Show, the Connecticut Center for the Book, the Asheville Art Directors
Club, and the Boston Art Directors Club.
Helen grew up in Athens, Greece,
and lives in Asheville, North Carolina, with her husband and daughter.
